Venetian blinds on large windows
Large glass is the best thing about a modern house and the hardest thing to shade well.
Big windows and two-storey glass create a specific problem: the covering is as visible as the window, from inside and out. A generic blind on a feature window undoes the feature.
Why external, not internal
On a large span the heat load is the first issue. An internal blind absorbs sunlight that has already come through the glass and re-radiates it into the room, so on a big north or west-facing window it manages glare far better than it manages temperature.
External venetians sit outside the glass and intercept the sun before it arrives. On a large window that is the difference between a room you can use in the afternoon and one you cannot.
Adjustable, not all-or-nothing
The advantage over a fixed awning or a solid screen is the slat. Angle them down and you cut direct sun while keeping daylight and the view. Open them and the window is unobstructed.
On a window that takes direct sun for part of the day and none for the rest — which is most of them — that adjustability is worth more than any fixed solution.
Appearance from both sides
From inside, the slats read as a horizontal line across the view rather than as fabric hung in front of it. From outside, they sit within the window reveal and look architectural, which is why they are common on commercial buildings and increasingly on residential ones.

Worth knowing before you commit
They are an external product, so wind rating and fixing matter — we check both at measure. On an exposed upper level a ZipScreen may suit better because it is track-guided.
And on a genuinely large or high window, motorisation is usually the difference between a system that gets adjusted and one that stays where it was left.
