Blinds, shutters or curtains?

All three cover a window. They behave very differently over ten years in a Queensland house.

Curtains are the traditional answer and still the right one in some rooms. But most of the reasons people default to them are habit rather than performance, so it is worth comparing them properly.

Where curtains still win

Softness and sound. A room with hard floors, glass and no soft furnishing echoes, and curtains fix that in a way a shutter cannot. They also add warmth to a formal room in a way hard materials do not.

And they are cheapest upfront. If you are furnishing a rental or a room you plan to change soon, that matters more than a twenty-year view.

Where they do not

Wet areas, anywhere with strong sun, and any window where you want light without exposure. Curtains are all-or-nothing — you cannot have a curtain half-shut and still see out.

They also need taking down and cleaning, which most people do far less often than they intend, and in a humid climate that shows.

The practical answer for most Queensland houses

Shutters or blinds through the working parts of the house — living areas, bedrooms, anything wet, anything facing sun. Curtains where you want the softness and the acoustics, usually a formal lounge or a main bedroom, often layered over a blind rather than instead of one.

It is not really an either-or. The mistake is putting curtains on a west-facing window and expecting them to fix the heat.
