Australian-manufactured shutters, built to last
Every Thermalite Plantation Shutter is guaranteed Australian-manufactured and manufactured in our modern Brisbane factory. Made from a dense, non-toxic polymer, Thermalite has the look and feel of wood — with major advantages. It's water resistant, fire retardant, and provides over two to three times the insulation of wood and vinyl shutters, ideal for internal and external use in homes, townhouses, hotels, hospitals, resorts and restaurants.
Shutters can be custom-made to fit any window or door in fixed, hinged, sliding and bi-fold styles, with elliptical louvres available in widths from 64 to 90 mm. The superb painted finish won't yellow like other shutters, keeping heat out through the Queensland summer while brightening any room with style.

Water resistant and fire retardant, so Thermalite can be used in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens. It won't crack, warp, shrink or discolour.

Thermalite in Brisbane homes

Plantation shutter styles
Every shutter is manufactured to the opening it covers, so the style is chosen room by room rather than for the whole house. These are the four we manufacture.
Fixed panels
The panel stays in place and only the louvres move. The simplest option and the one we fit most often to standard windows, where nothing needs to open.
Hinged
Panels swing open on a hinge like a cupboard door. Useful where you need full access to the window, for cleaning or for a servery opening.
Sliding
Panels run on a track, so nothing swings into the room. This is the option for sliding doors, stackers and wide openings where floor space matters.
Bi-fold
Panels fold back on themselves and clear the opening almost completely. Suited to patio doors and any opening you want to use as a real doorway.
Thermalite, timber and PVC compared
Most people choosing plantation shutters in Brisbane are deciding between three materials. Here is the honest version of the difference.
Timber
The look most people picture, and the material least suited to a subtropical climate. Timber moves with heat and humidity, so in a bathroom, a kitchen or a west-facing window it can warp, swell or split over time.
PVC and vinyl
Cheaper and water resistant, which solves the wet-area problem. The trade-off is usually in the finish and in how much the panel can span before it needs a mid-rail.
Thermalite™
A dense polymer built to give the warmth and look of timber without the movement. It is water resistant and fire retardant, so it goes in bathrooms and kitchens, and it will not crack, warp, shrink or discolour. Third-party testing shows it blocks as much as 16°C of temperature coming through the window.
Worth saying plainly: timber is a fine choice in a dry, shaded room. We manufacture Thermalite because most Brisbane windows are neither.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my order take to be made and installed?expand_more
Our Australian-manufactured Thermalite Plantation Shutters are manufactured within 15 working days — approximately 3 weeks. Installation timing is confirmed with your quote. If another company offers a similar time frame, we suggest you also get it in writing.
What do plantation shutters cost?expand_more
Nobody can price a shutter without measuring it, so we do not publish a price list. What we can do is explain what drives the number before anyone comes out. Our shutter cost guide walks through it, and the consult is free either way.
What are the downsides of plantation shutters?expand_more
They cost more up front than a blind, and they are a fixed fitting rather than something you swap out with the decor. In a wet area or a hot west-facing window, a timber shutter can also warp over time, which is the problem Thermalite was built to solve. If you want something you will change in five years, a blind is the better buy.
Are plantation shutters still in style?expand_more
They have been in Australian homes for decades and they are a fitting rather than a trend, which is most of the point. A shutter is sized to the window and stays with the house, so it tends to outlast the fashion that was current when it went in. Ours carry a 25-year transferable warranty on frames and panels, which is the length of commitment that only makes sense for something meant to stay.
Should I choose timber or PVC?expand_more
It depends on the room. Timber suits a dry, shaded space and looks superb there. For bathrooms, kitchens, and any window taking direct Queensland sun, a material that does not move with heat and moisture will last longer. We will tell you which one your rooms need at the consult, including where timber would be the better answer.
How do I clean plantation shutters?expand_more
A dry microfibre cloth along the louvres handles most of it, and Thermalite can take a damp cloth in wet areas because it is water resistant. There is a fuller walkthrough in our cleaning guide.
Are your shutters really Australian manufactured — can I see the factory?expand_more
Yes. Every Thermalite Plantation Shutter is manufactured in our own factory at 141 Bluestone Circuit, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Brisbane, and we invite all customers to visit and see it for themselves.
What warranty do Thermalite Plantation Shutters come with?expand_more
Every Thermalite Plantation Shutter comes with a 25-year transferable warranty on the frames and panels, plus a 3-year paint-finish guarantee — the finish will not crack, peel or yellow during that period.
Warranty is subject to our cleaning instructions and does not include costs relating to transport, removal, reinstallation or any labour. A call-out fee applies after one (1) month from the original installation date. Please follow our cleaning instructions.
Do you offer repairs?expand_more
Yes. Repairs are completed here in Australia without waiting for parts from overseas, backed by our extensive warranty period.
