Choosing outdoor shutters for a patio or balcony
Sun is the obvious problem. Wind is usually the one that decides whether the space gets used.
An unused patio is almost never unused because of temperature. It is wind, driving rain, western glare, or being overlooked. Work out which one it is and the product choice follows.
Match the product to the problem
Aluminium shutters — permanent shade with airflow
Fixed or operable louvres in powder-coated aluminium. Shade and privacy without closing the space in, and they read as part of the building rather than as an add-on. Best where you want the area shaded year round.
ZipScreens — close the space in on demand
Track-guided so there is no gap at the edge and no flapping in wind. Down when the weather turns, up when it does not. The right answer where wind or rain is what stops you using the space.
External venetians — adjustable through the day
Slats you can angle as the sun moves. Best on a balcony that takes direct sun for part of the day and none for the rest.
What to check before you order
Wind exposure. An upper balcony or anything on the coast sees loads a ground-floor patio never will. Track-guided screens handle it; loose-bottom outdoor blinds do not.
Fixings. The structure has to take the load. We check this at measure, and it occasionally changes what is possible.
Salt. Near the water, stainless steel hinges and screws are not optional — using anything else voids the warranty. Worth asking any supplier what hardware they are quoting.
How often you will operate it. If the answer is daily, consider motorising it at install.
The curb appeal point
Outdoor shutters do change how a house presents from the street, and that is a real secondary benefit. But it is a poor primary reason to buy — choose on the problem you have, and take the appearance as a bonus. See our note on shutters and property value for the honest version of that argument.
