Australian made, or just sold here?
Country-of-origin claims on window furnishings are looser than most buyers assume. Three questions settle it.
Almost every shutter company in Australia describes itself as Australian. Far fewer manufacture here. The gap between those two things is where most of the confusion sits, and it is worth knowing how to close it before you sign a quote.
What the claim can mean
Country-of-origin claims are regulated under Australian Consumer Law, and the tests are specific — but they still leave room for a product to be made overseas and finished, assembled or packed here while the business itself is legitimately Australian.
That is not necessarily dishonest. It does mean "Australian owned", "Australian company" and "Australian made" are three different statements, and only the last one tells you where the product was built.
Three questions that settle it
1. Where is your factory, and can I visit it?
A manufacturer can answer this in one sentence. Ours is at 141 Bluestone Circuit, Seventeen Mile Rocks, and has been since 1985.
2. What is your lead time?
Local manufacture runs in weeks. An imported order runs in months because it includes a sea freight leg. Ours is 15 to 20 business days, guaranteed in writing.
3. If a panel fails in year six, what happens?
This is the one that separates them. A manufacturer sends a technician and remakes the part. A reseller raises it with a factory overseas and waits.
Why it matters more here than elsewhere
A product specified for a temperate market meets a subtropical one badly. Humidity, UV load, storm season and salt air near the coast are all harder on window furnishings than the conditions most imported product is designed around.
It is also why our warranty terms are what they are. We can offer 25 years on frames and panels, transferable to the next owner, because we are the manufacturer and the remake happens in our own factory. That is not an offer a reseller can make about somebody else’s production line.
